Election Commission Considers Major Boundary Changes Amid Public Demands

1 min read

The Election Commission is considering a major reshuffle of parliamentary constituency boundaries ahead of the upcoming national election. The focus is on addressing logical demands from the public and stakeholders.

Already, the commission has received over 400 applications requesting changes to at least 66 constituency boundaries across different districts. Most of these requests aim to restore the boundaries established in 2001.

In the process of demarcation, the EC will review applications that contain valid and logical reasons. Following the recent promulgation of the National Parliament Constituency Delimitation (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, the commission has begun drafting the new boundaries for 300 parliamentary constituencies based on existing laws.

The EC is prioritizing applications submitted by citizens, recent census data, and considerations of administrative and geographical integrity. These factors are crucial to ensure fair and representative boundary delineation.

As of May 19, the commission has received at least 416 applications from over 60 constituencies seeking boundary adjustments. Most applicants are BNP leaders, activists, former MPs, and local government officials.

Approximately 90 percent of these applications are requesting the restoration of the 2001 constituency boundaries, reflecting widespread concern over recent changes.
