In a significant address at Dhaka Cantonment, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman emphasized the urgency of holding the next parliamentary elections without delay, hinting at December as a potential deadline. The remarks signal a clear call for timely political transition amid ongoing national discussions.
During the “Officers’ Address” held at Senaprangon, officers stationed in Dhaka excluding those deployed in aid of civil administration gathered in full combat uniform, with personnel from other garrisons joining virtually. Soldiers serving in United Nations missions also participated in the event.
In his opening remarks, the army chief lauded the Armed Forces for their unwavering service and dedication to sustaining national stability. Yet, he also expressed concern over what he described as unfair targeting of the military by vested interests, despite the force’s efforts since August 5 to maintain order and security.
Reaffirming the army’s commitment to sovereignty, Waker-Uz-Zaman underscored that the Bangladesh Army would never undertake actions that jeopardize the country’s independence. He instructed all ranks to uphold neutrality and execute their electoral responsibilities with integrity.
However, he voiced apprehension that prolonged military deployment for internal security could diminish the army’s readiness to defend the nation effectively. The address concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which an officer suggested transparency regarding offenses committed by dismissed personnel through the ISPR, Bangladesh Army’s public relations wing. The army chief responded that Islamic values discourage the public disclosure of individual misdeeds, emphasizing discipline and privacy.
As the country approaches a critical political juncture, the military leadership’s stance underscores the importance of a neutral, timely electoral process while balancing internal security concerns.
