India’s Secret Plan: Myanmar to Join the Seven Sisters Alliance

2 min read

India is reportedly developing a new strategic move that could see Myanmar becoming part of the renowned Seven Sisters, a group of northeastern states that historically form India’s eastern frontier. This initiative is viewed as a significant symbol of India’s diplomatic strength in the region.

Recent comments by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus have further amplified the importance of this plan. He stated that the northeastern region of India is surrounded by the Himalayas, and Bangladesh serves as an entrance to the Bay of Bengal. Experts believe that such remarks have accelerated India’s new strategic ambitions, pushing the plan forward.

According to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the Shillong-Shilchar corridor is not just a transportation route. It is expected to play a crucial role in boosting economic activity across northeastern India. This road will connect Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, and the Barak Valley of Assam, fostering regional integration and development.

Recently, the India-Bangladesh railway project was estimated to cost around 500 billion rupees. This project primarily aimed to use Bangladesh’s railway infrastructure to link northeastern India with the mainland, boosting connectivity between the regions.

However, India is now exploring alternative routes through Bhutan and Nepal, with an estimated cost ranging from 3500 to 4000 crore rupees. A government official mentioned, “We are no longer sending construction materials or funds directly to Bangladesh.”

In 2024, bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh reached approximately 12.9 billion dollars. Yet, ongoing political tensions and strategic concerns are creating a new diplomatic landscape.

This raises a critical question: Is this new strategy a sign of a major, yet unannounced, shift in regional geopolitics? Is the dark future quietly transforming the map of northeastern India? The silent changes in the region suggest that a new chapter may be unfolding, potentially reshaping the entire landscape beneath the surface.
