New Chapter in Pakistani Cricket as Leadership Shake-up Sparks Change

2 min read

Instability seems to be a recurring theme in Pakistani cricket. Whether it’s changing coaches, swapping captains, or personnel shifts, an unseen rule appears to govern these frequent upheavals. Recently, rumors of another major reshuffle have gained momentum, leading many to believe that a new chapter may be on the horizon for Pakistan’s cricketing future.

Ahead of the upcoming series against South Africa on home soil in October, reports suggest that Shan Masood could be replaced. Multiple Pakistani media outlets have indicated that Saurabh Shakil is being considered as a potential new Test captain for the series. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet to make an official announcement. Given the board’s history of frequent changes, this possibility isn’t entirely improbable.

Analysts believe that Pakistan’s Test format is set for significant reforms. Alongside the appointment of new coaching staff, a leadership overhaul seems imminent. Since Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup, the team has undergone extensive changes. Captaincy was shifted from Babar Azam, with Shan Masood taking over the Test leadership role. Unfortunately, under his captaincy, Pakistan’s performance has been underwhelming. Out of 12 Tests, they managed only three wins and suffered nine defeats, highlighting a clear decline.

In the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, Pakistan’s performance has been disappointing. They currently sit ninth in the points table. Despite whitewashing Australia, South Africa, and Bangladesh, Pakistan’s only series wins came against Sri Lanka and England. Given this scenario, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) feels the need for fresh leadership to steer the team in the new cycle.

Saurabh Shakil’s recent performances have been impressive. He has cemented his place in the middle order of the Test squad and boasts an average above 50 since his debut, a promising sign for the team. Additionally, he has performed well as captain for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Based on his consistent performances and composed demeanor, selectors are reportedly considering him for a long-term leadership role.
