Chattogram Port: The Beating Heart of Bangladesh’s Economic Future

2 min read

The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus, firmly identified Chattogram Port as the cornerstone of the nation’s economy. Speaking during a meeting held on the NCT-5 premises of the port, he emphasized that upgrading this vital facility is essential for expanding its capacity and bolstering the country’s economic growth.

“If the port facilities can be improved, it will attract more investors,” Yunus stated, underscoring the port’s strategic importance. His remarks drew attention to the need for modernizing the port infrastructure to unlock its full potential.

Attending the event were Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain and Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, who shared their insights on the port’s development.

Yunus highlighted that Chattogram Port must evolve into one of the world’s top ports to truly transform Bangladesh’s economy. “To achieve this, management should be handed over to leading global port operators,” he asserted. Such a move, he explained, would introduce advanced technologies and generate more employment opportunities for Bangladeshis.

He further emphasized that the port, currently modest in size, needs to be expanded to match international standards. “Without developing the port, it is impossible to bring about the economic change Bangladesh needs,” he added.

During his visit, the Chief Adviser toured various sections of the port, observing its operations firsthand. This visit marked his first trip to his hometown Chattogram since assuming office as the head of the interim government, signaling the government’s prioritization of port development as a key driver of national progress.
