In a shocking revelation, it has been confirmed that journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi were not victims of suicide but were brutally murdered. The investigation, led by a task force, has uncovered that two individuals were involved in this heinous crime. However, due to unclear DNA evidence, the perpetrators remain unidentified.
The task force’s report dismisses motives such as marital discord, theft, or professional rivalry. The couple was killed with a kitchen knife and a cleaver, and despite their injuries, they remained alive for some time. No signs of forced entry were found, and no one else was present in the house prior to the incident.
This gruesome murder occurred on the night of February 11, 2012. Despite prolonged investigations, no significant progress was made until the task force took over following a change in government. The task force has since interrogated 12 individuals, including seven journalists.
According to the report submitted to the High Court on April 22, Sagar and Runi were killed between 3 AM and 5 AM. DNA tests revealed that Sagar was stabbed first, followed by Runi. The couple was found lying on the same bed with their child, Megh.
The report further details that Sagar’s hands and feet were bound, likely to prevent him from resisting. Runi, perceived as less of a threat, was not restrained. Blood pattern analysis suggests that Runi was killed first, followed by Sagar.
DNA from four individuals was found at the crime scene, including Sagar and Runi. However, the other two DNA profiles remain unidentified, leaving the motive and identities of the killers unclear.
The task force noted that crucial evidence was compromised by media personnel and locals before investigators arrived between 10:30 and 11 AM the following morning. The broken part of the kitchen balcony was newly damaged, indicating it could have been used for entry and exit, but no complete footprints were found.
The task force, in collaboration with the CID, explained that identifying DNA becomes challenging when samples contain more than three profiles. In this case, the presence of DNA from five to six individuals made identification impossible.
No evidence of enmity was found in Runi’s official documents, nor was there any link to her reports on the Bibiyana gas field. Similarly, no professional rivalry connected to Sagar’s news portal, Energy Bangla, was found.
The task force also ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide due to family disputes. After thorough crime scene analysis and evidence examination, it concluded that both Sagar and Runi were murdered.
On the night of February 11, 2012, Sagar and Runi were killed in their rented apartment in West Rajabazar, Dhaka. At the time, Sagar was working for a private television channel, while Runi was employed at another network. Following the murder, Runi’s brother filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.
