Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has officially approved Elon Musk’s Starlink to operate commercial satellite internet services in Bangladesh, positioning the country as the second in South Asia to embrace such technology. The approval was granted on Monday when Prof Yunus signed off on the “Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) Satellite Services Operator License.”
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant, revealed that the decision was driven by widespread public demand following repeated internet supply disruptions inflicted by the previous autocratic regime of the Awami League in its final days. The introduction of Starlink’s virtually uninterrupted internet services aims to address these persistent connectivity issues.
Beyond fulfilling public demand, the Chief Adviser also expressed hopes of boosting Bangladesh’s investment climate. He urged Elon Musk to expedite bringing Starlink’s services to Bangladesh within 90 days, emphasizing the potential benefits for economic growth.
Starlink’s satellite services are expected to revolutionize internet access across Bangladesh, overcoming barriers faced by traditional broadband and mobile networks. The service will provide continuous internet coverage to even the most remote areas, including islands, hilly regions, and coastal zones, ensuring round-the-clock connectivity, Taiyeb told reporters.
