Russia Declares Three-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine to Mark WWII Victory Anniversary

2 min read

In a move aimed at commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Russia announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine. The Kremlin stated that the 72-hour truce will be in effect for three days surrounding May 9, a date when President Vladimir Putin is expected to host international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, to celebrate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

The Russian government emphasized that all military activities will be suspended during this period, urging Ukraine to follow suit. A statement from the Kremlin read, “All military actions are suspended for this period. Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example.” However, it also warned that if Ukraine violates the ceasefire, Russian armed forces will respond appropriately and effectively.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded critically, questioning the timing and sincerity of the ceasefire. He tweeted, “If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8th?” emphasizing that any ceasefire should be genuine and not merely symbolic for a parade.

This is the second ceasefire announcement made by President Putin in quick succession. The first was a 30-hour Easter ceasefire, which both sides accused each other of violating multiple times. The recent announcements highlight ongoing tensions and the fragile nature of any efforts toward peace in the conflict.
