US Government Set to Withdraw Another $1 Billion in Funding from Harvard

2 min read

The Trump administration is reportedly planning to revoke an additional $1 billion in federal grants and contracts for health research from Harvard University, intensifying an ongoing clash over institutional independence and oversight. This move follows an earlier decision to freeze $2.2 billion in multi-year grants and $60 million in contracts after Harvard refused to comply with certain policy directives, according to media reports.

Last Monday, the administration announced the freeze on the funding, citing Harvard’s decision not to follow specific policy demands. However, tensions escalated when Harvard publicly shared a letter from the Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, catching officials by surprise, the media reported Sunday.

Sources close to the matter revealed that initially, the administration had intended to treat Harvard more leniently than Columbia University, which recently made policy changes after disputes over federal funding, including restrictions on demonstrations and curriculum reviews. Now, officials are reportedly applying increased pressure, aiming to challenge Harvard’s independence more forcefully.

Harvard’s response has been unequivocal. In an April 11 letter, President Alan M. Garber emphasized that the university would not surrender its independence or constitutional rights. Harvard’s rejection of the demands includes resisting calls to allow government oversight of admissions, hiring, and ideological staffing—requirements the university views as unacceptable encroachments on its autonomy.

The current dispute highlights a broader battle between the government and one of America’s most prestigious institutions. Harvard has become a symbol of defiance against federal interference, with the university asserting that the demands go beyond legitimate efforts to combat antisemitism and veer into government overreach, threatening academic freedom and institutional integrity.
