Albany Faces Widespread Disruption After Record Flooding

2 min read

Albany is grappling with severe flooding after experiencing its wettest day on record, leading to the closure of businesses and schools throughout the city. Superintendent Wayne Green from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services reported that emergency calls began around 9 PM as water levels rose, cutting off roads.

“Most of the calls were related to flooding, with only a small amount of actual structural damage reported,” Green stated. He noted the challenges posed by debris and litter scattered across the flooded roads, complicating emergency response efforts.

A Rex Airlines flight bound for Albany had to be rerouted back to Perth on Thursday night, and further delays are expected on Friday morning.

Many vehicles found themselves trapped in floodwaters, and several schools across Albany were forced to close their doors. Childcare centers also faced difficulties, with some unable to accept children as they shifted their focus to cleanup efforts.

Preity Dhaliwal, owner of a local childcare center that opened just seven months ago, shared the impact of the flooding. Typically, the center cares for about 62 to 68 children daily, with a total enrollment of 161.

As the community works to recover from this unprecedented weather event, the focus remains on ensuring safety and restoring normalcy in Albany.
