Authorities Investigate Suspicious Packages Along Bundaberg Coastline

Authorities are conducting an extensive search along the Bundaberg coastline, located 400 kilometers north of Brisbane, following the discovery of suspicious packages in the aftermath of severe weather conditions.

The investigation began early Tuesday morning when a member of the public reported finding a package on the beach. This prompted a thorough search of the water and shoreline in the beachside suburbs of Burnett Heads, Mon Repos, and Bargara, where additional packages were subsequently located.

This area had recently experienced significant rainfall, with around 300 millimeters of rain causing flash flooding that affected approximately 1,600 homes and businesses in the nearby Hervey Bay.

On Wednesday, patrols resumed, involving police, surf lifesavers, and personnel from the State Emergency Service (SES) as they worked to determine the origin of the packages, which remains unknown.

This incident comes just three months after authorities made Australia’s largest cocaine seizure, confiscating 2.34 tonnes of the drug from a boat allegedly en route to Bundaberg. In December 2018, similar packages believed to contain illegal substances were found washed ashore at Elliott Heads and Mon Repos.

Authorities are urging anyone who encounters a suspicious package to report it immediately by contacting Policelink at 131 444. The investigation continues as officials work to ensure public safety along the coastline.
