WA Liberal Leader Distances Party from Controversial Abortion Comments

1 min read

Western Australia Liberal leader Libby Mettam has firmly ruled out a review of the state’s abortion laws, distancing herself from remarks made by Albany candidate Thomas Brough.

During a press conference on Saturday to announce a $5 million investment in the Albany Health Campus, Brough, an emergency room doctor and local councillor, expressed support for reviewing abortion laws, stating, “Babies born alive should not be left to die.”

In response, Mettam clarified, “Reviewing WA’s abortion laws is not part of our plan.” She emphasized that the Liberal Party views abortion as a matter for individual conscience, noting her support for recent reforms.

The party reiterated this stance in a subsequent statement, asserting that while Brough is entitled to his opinion, there will be no review of abortion laws.

These comments come just a week before the state election and follow revelations that Brough will face the State Administrative Tribunal for alleged professional misconduct linked to comments made about the LGBTQIA+ community during a council meeting last year. The situation adds to a series of controversies that the Liberal Party has faced in recent weeks.
