In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Australia has retained the Women’s Ashes with a commanding 57-run victory over England in the first T20 match at the SCG.
Despite the absence of injured stars Ash Gardner and Alyssa Healy, the Australian side showcased their depth and talent, amassing an imposing total of 198 runs. Beth Mooney led the charge with a stellar performance, scoring 75 runs off 51 balls after opening with debutant Georgia Voll, who contributed a solid 21.
Mooney’s brilliance was complemented by valuable contributions from Phoebe Litchfield (25) and Tahlia McGrath (26). However, England’s struggles in the field were evident as they squandered multiple chances, committing errors that allowed Australia to capitalize, leading to an extras count of 15.
England’s chase stumbled from the outset, with Maia Bouchier falling to Megan Schutt in the first over and Danni Wyatt-Hodge departing for a golden duck just moments later. Although Sophia Dunkley provided a glimmer of hope with a rapid 59 runs off 30 balls, the visitors struggled to find momentum.
The Australian bowling attack, spearheaded by leg-spinners Alana King and Georgia Wareham, proved too formidable, combining for five wickets as England’s middle and lower order crumbled. The final act saw England lose their last four wickets for a mere four runs, sealing a resounding victory for Australia and extending their lead to an unassailable 8-0 in the multi-format series.
