Calm Amidst Chaos: Etihad Airways Crew Praised for Handling Takeoff Abort

2 min read

In a dramatic turn of events at Melbourne Airport, passengers aboard an Etihad Airways flight found solace in the composed demeanor of their captain and crew as they faced an unexpected situation on Sunday night.

Flight EY461, bound for Abu Dhabi and carrying 298 travelers, was forced to abort its takeoff, prompting immediate action from airport fire crews. The airline confirmed that the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner’s flight crew “decided to halt the take-off for technical reasons,” though specifics were not disclosed.

Etihad Airways expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, emphasizing that “the safety and comfort of our guests and crew remain our highest priority.”

Fran Brody, a passenger returning to Ireland after a two-week family visit in Sydney, recounted the moment with a hint of humor. Just as she settled in to watch “Gone With The Wind,” the incident unfolded. “There was smoke, but the pilot kept us informed about what was going to happen,” she said, commending the crew’s calm communication throughout the ordeal.

To ensure safety, the Aviation Rescue and Firefighting Service deployed firefighting foam as a precautionary measure. The aircraft remained on the runway until mid-Monday morning, requiring repairs before it could be towed away, allowing the airport to reopen the runway after an overnight closure.

In the face of uncertainty, the professionalism and poise of the Etihad Airways crew shone brightly, reaffirming the importance of safety in air travel.
