Ethnic Rebels Strike Major Blow to Myanmar Junta

2 min read

In a dramatic turn of events, Myanmar’s Arakan Army (AA) has captured a key military regional command in Rakhine State, marking a significant setback for the ruling junta. The AA announced on its Telegram channel that it had completely seized the western regional command at Ann after weeks of intense combat.

This victory represents the second major loss for the military in just five months, underscoring the escalating conflict between the junta and various ethnic rebel groups. Of Myanmar’s 14 regional commands, many are embroiled in battles against established ethnic forces and newer “People’s Defense Forces” that emerged following the military’s 2021 coup.

Since the AA reignited hostilities last November, breaking a long-standing ceasefire, Rakhine State has been a hotbed of conflict. The AA has gained control of vast areas, nearly isolating the state capital, Sittwe, which is pivotal due to its China and India-backed port projects.

In a bold move, the AA released photos of a man identified as the Ann deputy regional commander, now in their custody. This capture highlights a historical shift, as the military had never lost a regional command until last August when the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) took control of the northeastern command in Lashio, Shan State.

Myanmar’s border regions have long been arenas of strife, home to numerous ethnic armed groups fighting for autonomy and resource control since the country gained independence from Britain in 1948. The current unrest has severe implications for Rakhine State’s economy, with the UN warning of impending famine due to disrupted commerce and agriculture. The UN Development Programme has projected famine conditions by mid-2025 if the situation remains unaddressed.
