Russia Vows Retaliation After Ukrainian Missile Strike

1 min read

The Kremlin announced its intent to “definitely” retaliate after Ukraine launched an attack on a southern airfield using US-supplied ATACMS missiles. This development follows President Vladimir Putin’s previous threats to target Kyiv with Russia’s new hypersonic missile, Oreshnik, if such strikes continue.

The Russian defense ministry accused Ukraine of an overnight missile assault on an airfield in Taganrog, located in the Rostov region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov assured that a response would come “when, and in a way that is deemed appropriate,” although specifics remain undisclosed.

The US only recently authorized Ukraine to utilize ATACMS against Russian territories, after prolonged requests from Kyiv. In response, American intelligence has warned of potential Russian preparations to deploy Oreshnik missiles against Ukraine.

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh highlighted the possibility of these missile strikes occurring soon, based on intelligence assessments. As both nations intensify their aerial offensives, Russia’s defense ministry announced the capture of the settlement of Zarya in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, marking further advances on the battlefield.
