The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is calling for an upgrade of the voter list instead of a door-to-door registration campaign by the Election Commission. Abdul Moin Khan, a standing committee member and chair of the party’s election reform committee, stressed the impracticality and potential errors of a door-to-door approach during a press conference on Monday.
Moin Khan outlined a ten-point reform agenda that includes removing previous amendments to the Representation of the People Order, revising election management rules, and enhancing the Election Commission’s capacity. He emphasized the need for a level playing field to ensure genuine representation in elections.
Fellow committee member Nazrul Islam Khan noted that the proposed reforms would streamline the electoral process without unnecessary delays. Salah Uddin Ahmed highlighted that discussions with experts informed their proposals, which could be implemented within three to four months.
Addressing the need for a caretaker government, Salah Uddin Ahmed asserted that its establishment is essential for fair elections, while Nazrul Islam Khan called for accountability for past electoral misconduct to prevent future participation by those responsible.
