An athlete has tragically died after requiring medical assistance during the swimming portion of the Ironman triathlon in Busselton, Western Australia. The individual was transported to a local hospital following the incident, but unfortunately, did not survive.
Event organizers confirmed the news, expressing their condolences and support for the athlete’s family. They noted that onsite water safety and medical personnel responded swiftly to the emergency.
The triathlon, now in its 20th year, attracted over 3,500 competitors from around the world, with more than 1,600 participants traveling from outside Western Australia. The challenging race consists of a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle, and a 42.2km run.
In the men’s division, Loic Draoulec emerged victorious, while Sally Wood claimed the title in the women’s competition. The event also featured the Ironman 70.3, where Italian Gregory Barnaby secured victory in the men’s category, propelling him to the top of the Ironman Pro Series standings ahead of the final race in New Zealand. Spanish athlete Marta Sanchez celebrated her second Ironman 70.3 win of the year in the women’s division.
