Rising Anti-Semitism Sparks Outrage in Australia

2 min read

In the wake of a spate of anti-Semitic vandalism in Sydney, Australian politicians expressed their shock and dismay. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incidents as “disturbing and deeply troubling,” asserting that “there is no place for anti-Semitism in Australia.”

However, the Jewish community, while horrified, was not surprised. Once considered aberrations in Australia’s multicultural landscape, such acts of hatred have become alarmingly commonplace, reflecting a troubling rise in anti-Semitism. Since the October 7 attacks in Israel, anti-Semitic incidents have surged by as much as 500%. These include violence, intimidation, vandalism, and online harassment, affecting public spaces, workplaces, and educational institutions.

The latest incident involved vandals causing an estimated $70,000 in damage to vehicles and properties, including the restaurant Chiswick, owned by chef Matt Moran. Robert Gregory, CEO of the Australian Jewish Association, criticized political leaders for fostering an environment that emboldens anti-Semitism, stating, “Labor has looked on as an increasingly violent anti-Israel movement has taken over Australian streets.”

While politicians voice their shock, many believe they share responsibility for the rise in anti-Semitic rhetoric. Instances of anti-Semitic slogans have been heard in Parliament and calls for Israel to exercise restraint amidst ongoing attacks have diminished support for the Jewish state. As anti-Semitism continues to rear its head, the community urges leaders to take decisive action.
