Perth Parents Seek Answers After Toddler Given Wrong Medication Before Flu Death

1 min read

The grieving parents of three-year-old Aliyah Yugovich are demanding answers after discovering their daughter was wrongly administered an anti-seizure drug before she died with the flu in a Perth hospital.

Aliyah, who did not have conditions requiring the medication, passed away in July following complications from influenza after a routine tonsillectomy.

A preliminary coroner’s report revealed the shocking error, yet the cause of death remains undetermined, with findings expected by Christmas. The Health Department has initiated a SAC-1 review, while the involved hospitals claim no records of administering the drug.

Aliyah’s parents expressed their devastation, questioning why unprescribed medication was given and criticizing the lack of communication between agencies. The couple also highlighted systemic issues, noting that they were not informed of a separate medication error involving an incorrect dose of antibiotics.

The family is now calling for greater transparency and support for bereaved parents, citing inadequate services. They are establishing a foundation in Aliyah’s memory to assist other families experiencing sudden child loss.
