Max Jorgensen’s try in extra time clinched a remarkable 42-37 victory for Australia against England at Twickenham on Saturday. The Wallabies appeared headed for defeat when England’s Maro Itoje scored a try five minutes from the end, with Marcus Smith’s conversion putting England ahead 37-35.
However, with the match clock already at 80 minutes, replacement back Jorgensen crossed the line to secure Australia’s first win over England at Twickenham since their triumph in the 2015 World Cup. This victory marked only the second win for Australia in their last 12 encounters with England, providing a much-needed boost after the Wallabies had suffered five defeats in six games during this year’s Rugby Championship.
Australia’s win in the opening Test of their tour of Britain keeps alive their aspirations of replicating the historic 1984 Wallabies’ Grand Slam. In contrast, England’s defeat adds to their woes, marking their second consecutive loss in the November internationals following a narrow 24-22 defeat to New Zealand last week. This result also represents England’s sixth defeat in eight Tests against all opponents.
