At least 25 individuals lost their lives in a devastating bomb explosion at a railway station in Quetta, located in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province. The blast, which injured dozens more, occurred as a morning train prepared to depart for Peshawar.
The Balochistan Liberation Army, a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for what authorities have identified as a suicide attack. This incident is part of a recent surge in violence linked to demands for regional independence and resource control.
City commissioner reports confirm the suicide bomber was among the deceased, with approximately 50 others injured, including both civilians and military personnel. Senior police official Muhammad Baloch indicated the bomber carried 6-8kg of explosives.
Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos and devastation. Abdul Jabbar, injured in the blast, recounted the horror as he entered the station. Muhammad Sohail, arriving shortly after the explosion, described the destruction and cries for help.
The Baloch Liberation Army stated the attack targeted a military unit returning from training. Police confirmed 14 soldiers were among the dead. Balochistan’s chief minister condemned the attack as deplorable, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
The attack underscores the ongoing insurgency in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest yet least developed province, which has been plagued by demands for independence. The region’s strategic location, bordering Iran and Afghanistan and featuring a vast coastline, adds to its geopolitical significance.
