BNP Chairperson and former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is preparing for an overseas medical transfer, initially heading to London before being flown to a third country for specialized treatment, her personal physician, Prof AZM Zahid Hossain, announced Tuesday.

“Given her critical health status, we are making swift arrangements for her transfer to an international, multidisciplinary medical facility,” Hossain said. The process includes securing a long-range specialized air ambulance and coordinating necessary logistics to expedite her transfer.

Khaleda will briefly stop in London before moving to a country equipped with the comprehensive medical resources required for her complex health needs. “We aim to complete the formalities quickly so that Madam can embark on her journey as soon as possible,” Hossain added, noting that her office has already notified Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, detailing the doctors, nurses, and family members accompanying her.

Battling multiple health conditions, Khaleda has struggled with liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and complications involving her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyes. Last year, U.S. specialists performed a TIPS procedure to alleviate liver-related issues, marking a crucial intervention in her ongoing treatment. Since her liver cirrhosis diagnosis in 2021, doctors have consistently advised advanced medical care abroad.

Khaleda’s legal troubles began in 2018 when she was jailed following a conviction in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, later receiving an extended sentence of 10 years. She was also convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust case. Amid the pandemic, she was released in March 2020 on the condition that she remain at her home in Dhaka’s Gulshan and abstain from international travel. This year, her release was further extended by a presidential order in August, granting her complete freedom.
