The White House has firmly rejected speculation that Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio could leave their cabinet positions following the Republican Party’s disappointing performance in the recent US midterm elections, amid growing scrutiny of senior administration figures.
Questions over the future of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have intensified after several media reports suggested that some Republicans were dissatisfied with his handling of the ongoing Iran conflict, which many party members believe contributed to the Democrats’ sweeping electoral gains.
According to reports, at least one outgoing Republican member of Congress has threatened to force an impeachment vote against Hegseth as early as next week. Responding to the criticism, Hegseth released a video statement defending his record and dismissing efforts to remove him from office.
“You see, they attack me. They attack us because we are effective,” Hegseth said.
“It’s not going to work. We will not back down.”
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected reports suggesting that he may step down from the Trump administration to prepare for a potential presidential campaign in 2028.
Speaking to The New York Times, Rubio said remaining in the administration until the end of President Donald Trump’s term had always been his intention.
“I love the work I’m doing,” Rubio said.
“And plus I always laugh when they say he’s going to leave his job. I go, ‘Which one?’”
Both the White House and the US State Department have dismissed speculation surrounding Rubio’s possible departure, describing the reports as unfounded and reiterating their confidence in his leadership.
While Rubio appears secure in his role, political pressure on Hegseth remains more intense. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have both acknowledged that the prolonged conflict with Iran played a significant role in Republican losses that ultimately handed control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate to the Democrats.
Despite criticism from within his party, Trump has publicly backed Hegseth and indicated that he intends to keep him in the administration.
“I have every intention” of keeping him, Trump said when asked about the Defence Secretary’s future.
During a later appearance at the White House, Trump praised Hegseth’s performance, describing his work as a “fantastic job” and pointing to what he viewed as key achievements during his tenure, including the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict and other national security matters.
The developments highlight ongoing debate within Republican circles over the causes of the party’s election defeat and the future direction of the administration as it enters a new political reality under a Democrat-controlled Congress.
