More than 11,000 people in seven Malaysian states have been affected by severe flooding triggered by torrential monsoon rains, the National Disaster Management Agency reported Monday.

Floods are a recurring crisis on Malaysia’s eastern coast during the annual monsoon season from October to March, often forcing thousands from their homes. As of 6 a.m. local time Monday, 11,009 people from 3,839 families had been displaced in Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu, and Selangor.

The northeastern state of Kelantan, bordering Thailand, has been worst hit, with 8,228 people affected. Authorities confirmed that no deaths have been reported so far. To accommodate evacuees, 60 temporary shelters have been opened across the affected regions.

In a separate incident Sunday, continuous rainfall triggered a landslide in Wang Kelian, a village in Perlis, leaving around 400 people stranded. They were later moved to safety and are sheltering in a mosque on higher ground, according to state news agency Bernama.
