Russia and Ukraine Trade Strikes on Kyiv and Moscow Hours After Zelensky’s Talks With Trump and European Leaders

Russia launched a fresh missile attack on Kyiv early Thursday, while Ukrainian drones struck a major oil refinery in Moscow, as both countries exchanged fire just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky held discussions with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders.

Explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital, and authorities in the northeastern city of Sumy reported that one person was killed in a drone strike. Air‑raid alerts were issued across most of the country as Kyiv’s military administration warned residents to stay in shelters.

“The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in safe places until the air raid alert is over,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration.

It was the second attack on Kyiv this week, coming as Zelensky continues efforts to increase diplomatic pressure on Moscow to negotiate an end to the four‑year‑long war.

In Russia, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that drones hit the city’s refinery the second strike on the facility in a week highlighting Ukraine’s growing ability to target strategic infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.

Zelensky said he spoke with Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, describing the talks as a “coordinating conversation” aimed at finding a path to end the war.

The latest escalation follows a major Russian strike earlier this week that killed 10 people in Kyiv and damaged a 1,000‑year‑old monastery, a site deeply symbolic to Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual identity. Russia has denied targeting the monastery.

Trump said on Wednesday that Russia was losing more soldiers than Ukraine, after suggesting that both Putin and Zelensky appeared open to “doing something” about the conflict. The Kremlin, however, said Putin did not discuss any potential meeting with Zelensky during his recent call with Trump, and insisted that Ukraine was the side suffering losses.

As both capitals come under renewed fire, diplomatic efforts continue but the battlefield remains as volatile as ever.
