Police have begun reducing security restrictions around RAF Fairford following a major counter-terrorism operation that prompted evacuations and extensive searches near the Gloucestershire air base.
A bomb disposal team was deployed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported, with authorities establishing a 400-metre security cordon around the affected area as a precaution.
However, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), said on Tuesday that the response was based on a range of information available to investigators at the time rather than any single factor.
Taylor defended the decisions made by police during the operation, stressing that public safety remained the highest priority throughout the investigation.
The safety of the public is at the forefront of our investigative decision-making, and this was certainly the case yesterday,” he said.
He acknowledged that some members of the public may have been surprised by subsequent developments but said investigative decisions were based on experience, risk assessments, and operational strategy.
“I understand why this development was surprising to some, but I would like to reiterate that this is an investigative decision and one which is grounded in experience and strategy,” Taylor added.
Authorities have confirmed that police cordons surrounding the base are expected to be fully removed on Wednesday. Residents from 85 homes who were evacuated as a precaution on Sunday have now been allowed to return to their properties.
The investigation remains ongoing, with five suspects continuing to be examined by counter-terrorism officers.
The men, all UK nationals aged between 23 and 25, were arrested following the incident. Police said four of the suspects are from Westminster, while the fifth is from Camden. Searches of all associated residential properties have now been completed.
Although the men have been released on bail, authorities said they remain under active investigation. Their bail conditions include strict restrictions on their movements and contact with other individuals.
The incident attracted significant attention due to RAF Fairford’s strategic military role. The base has long served as an important operational location for the United States Air Force and has recently been used in support of military operations connected to tensions in the Middle East.
Counter-terrorism officers have not disclosed further details about the nature of the investigation, but officials have said inquiries are continuing as detectives assess evidence gathered during the operation.
