Queensland Labor frontbencher Meaghan Scanlon has confirmed she will recontest her Gaven seat at the 2028 state election, ending weeks of speculation that she might shift to a safer electorate following a substantial boundary redraw.
The Queensland Redistribution Commission’s June review introduced significant changes to Gaven, raising questions about whether Scanlon who reclaimed the seat with a margin of less than one per cent would stay.
Opposition Leader Steven Miles announced Scanlon’s decision during his speech at the Labor state conference on Saturday, acknowledging the “lot of speculation” surrounding her future. He said many had encouraged her to consider a safer seat, but insisted she never seriously entertained the idea. Miles added he was confident she could win and would win Gaven again.

Scanlon, first elected in 2017, has served as both environment minister and housing minister in the Palaszczuk and Miles governments. The redistribution commission said Gaven required major adjustments because it was below quota and projected to fall further, prompting the redraw.
Despite the changes, Scanlon said she remained committed to representing the community where she grew up, signalling her intention to fight for the seat once more.
