Massive Strike Hits Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport as New Wave of Attacks Unfolds

2 min read

A major assault appears to be underway at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport, with eyewitness footage showing burning aircraft and thick plumes of smoke rising from Iran’s busiest commercial hub. Videos circulating on social media late Thursday depict multiple planes on fire, while satellite images taken earlier in the day confirm several aircraft were positioned at the airport.

Iranian state media has acknowledged that parts of the airport have been struck, though details remain scarce. The attack comes shortly after the Israeli military announced a “broad‑scale new wave of strikes” across Iran, escalating a campaign that has intensified steadily in recent days.

Mehrabad was previously targeted on 4 March, when Israel said it had dismantled defence and detection systems that posed a threat to its air force, including facilities linked to helicopter manufacturing. But witnesses say tonight’s bombardment is far more intense, with explosions shaking nearby neighbourhoods and emergency crews rushing toward the site.

It remains unclear which sections of the airport were hit in the latest strike, or whether there are casualties. The attack marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has already spread far beyond its initial flashpoints, drawing in multiple fronts and heightening fears of a broader regional confrontation.
