A man died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, according to the New York Police Department. Police said they received a call at 6:32pm local time reporting that a male had set himself alight at First Avenue and 42nd Street. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not provided a motive.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres said the organisation was “saddened by this tragic and horrific incident” and extended condolences to the man’s family.
Although investigators have not confirmed the man’s identity or political affiliation, US media and pro‑Tibet activists say he was a long‑time campaigner for Tibetan rights. Tencho Gyatso, president of the International Campaign for Tibet, identified him as Lobga Rangzen, describing him as a “tireless advocate for Tibet” who dedicated his life to peacefully raising awareness of human‑rights abuses.
Gyatso said Rangzen had been outspoken against China’s new Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, which Beijing says is intended to strengthen national identity among ethnic groups. Overseas activists argue the law will further erode the rights of minorities such as Tibetans and Uyghurs.
The UN did not respond to additional requests for comment.
Tibet has been under Chinese control since 1950, when Beijing sent troops into the region. The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has lived in exile in India since fleeing Lhasa after a failed uprising in 1959.
