A man has been taken into custody following a shooting in northern Tasmania that left another man with a gunshot wound to the stomach, police confirmed on Thursday.

Officers arrested the suspect at a residential property in Wynyard around 1:15pm during a coordinated operation involving specialist police units. Authorities said no serious injuries occurred during the arrest.

The incident stems from what police described as a firearms wounding on Sandpiper Road, Wynyard, on Wednesday afternoon. The victim, a man in his late 30s, was shot in the stomach and rushed to hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition as he continues to receive medical treatment.

Police thanked local residents for their cooperation during the search effort, which saw a significant police presence across the area. Authorities said officers will remain in the community for the time being, but there is no ongoing search for additional suspects.

The investigation is continuing as detectives work to establish the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
