In May 2024, former Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan delivered one of the most confrontational moments in recent UN history. Standing before the General Assembly in New York, Erdan fed a printed copy of the UN Charter into a small electric shredder as delegates prepared to vote on a resolution urging the Security Council to consider granting full Palestinian membership. Erdan accused member states of antisemitism, declaring: “So many of you are Jew‑hating,” before warning that the vote amounted to “shredding the UN Charter.” Despite the outburst, 143 countries supported the motion, with only nine opposed. Erdan resigned from his UN post shortly afterward.
But his departure marked the beginning of a far more ambitious campaign. Erdan has since become a key figure in a coordinated effort to discredit the UN and push for the United States to withdraw from the organisation entirely, a move that would fundamentally reshape global diplomacy.
Last week, an investigation by an Israeli newspaper revealed that the Misgav Institute a right‑wing think tank formally known as the Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy hired a major US lobbying firm to promote a report attacking the UN. According to filings cited by Haaretz, Misgav received more than $2 million from anonymous US donors between 2024 and 2025.
Misgav is led by Meir Ben‑Shabbat, a former head of Israel’s National Security Council and a 30‑year veteran of the Shin Bet. The report, co‑authored by Erdan, was intended for circulation among members of Congress, with meetings planned between Misgav officials and senior figures in the Trump administration. The goal: build political momentum for a US withdrawal from the UN and weaken the institution’s global standing.
Erdan’s shredding stunt, once seen as a theatrical protest, now appears to have been the opening act of a broader, well‑funded strategy aimed at reshaping international governance and challenging the UN’s legitimacy at its core.
