The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has dismissed a complaint lodged by human rights group FairSquare against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, ruling that the matter falls outside the jurisdiction of its Ethics Commission. The decision comes amid growing scrutiny of Infantino’s public appearances and alleged political alignment.
FairSquare had accused Infantino of a “repeated breach of political neutrality rules,” claiming he publicly supported actions and policies of US President Donald Trump on several occasions. The group previously filed a similar complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee, challenging what it described as shortcomings in FIFA’s own oversight processes.
An IOC spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the Ethics Commission had “thoroughly analysed” the complaint but determined it did not meet the criteria for action under the IOC Code of Ethics. According to the Commission, the allegations related solely to FIFA’s governance decisions, its dealings with governments, and its implementation of sport‑specific rules areas that fall outside the IOC’s remit.
“The complaint falls outside the IOC Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction. FairSquare has been informed accordingly,” the spokesperson said.
Infantino, an IOC member since 2020, has faced heightened attention over his appearances alongside Trump, a central element of FairSquare’s complaint. During this year’s World Cup co‑hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada Trump was involved in several controversial moments, including one that drew boos from the crowd at New York New Jersey Stadium as he appeared with Infantino.
The IOC’s decision marks another setback for FairSquare’s campaign, though the organisation has signalled it will continue pressing for accountability within global sports governance.
