‘Gold Coast Surfer’ Metro Buses to Replace Axed Light Rail as Queensland Unveils New Transport Vision

2 min read

A new era of public transport is coming to the southern Gold Coast, with the Queensland government announcing metro‑style “Gold Coast Surfer” buses to run from Coolangatta to Burleigh Heads and west to Robina a major shift from the previously planned Stage 4 light rail, which was scrapped after strong community opposition nine months ago.

Premier David Crisafulli said the new plan reflects what locals have been demanding: infrastructure that supports growth without compromising the region’s lifestyle. “We are delivering infrastructure for a growing state to protect the lifestyle of the people already here,” he said. “This means better public transport from Robina to the Gold Coast Airport. That’s generational infrastructure, and that’s a plan for growth for this city.”

The government says the metro‑style network will be operational before the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, offering high‑frequency services every 10 minutes from the state’s southernmost point through Palm Beach and Burleigh Heads, and west to Varsity Lakes and Robina.

Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said detailed design work will now begin, including decisions on how the service will be delivered. He declined to say whether the system would require dedicating road space a sensitive issue given the region’s frequent congestion but insisted the service will transform how locals move around.

“Ten‑minute headways … that will be a game changer,” Mickelberg said. “This is about delivering a genuine alternative to getting in the car. This is a game changer for the Gold Coast, and we are getting on with the job of delivering the infrastructure.”

The “Gold Coast Surfer” buses are being pitched as a modern, flexible and community‑backed solution one the government hopes will ease pressure on roads, support tourism and prepare the region for a decade of rapid growth.
