France Bans Mobile Phones in High Schools to Tackle Social and Mental Health Concerns

1 min read

The French government has announced a ban on mobile phone use in high schools, extending a policy already in place at junior schools. President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement during an event in the northeastern city of Mirecourt, stressing that the measure will take effect from the start of next year.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray will oversee the implementation of the ban. Macron explained that high schools are not only places for academic learning but also for social interaction, and smartphones are increasingly becoming an obstacle to that process. He warned that teenagers risk suffering from loneliness and mental health issues at an early age, which could pose serious threats to their future.

The decision comes amid growing global concern over the negative impact of social media on students, including rising cases of cyberbullying, sexual harassment, and criminal behavior, as well as widespread reports of loneliness and psychological distress among young people.
