Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, arrived in Bangladesh on Tuesday for a three-day visit aimed at deepening educational and cultural cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
During his visit to Dhaka and Rajshahi, McDonald is scheduled to meet government officials, education leaders, teachers, students, young people, and cultural partners. The visit is also intended to provide an opportunity to observe the impact of British Council programmes and partnerships across the country.
On the first day of his visit, McDonald met Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon to discuss Bangladesh’s education priorities and explore opportunities for expanding collaboration between Bangladesh and the UK in the education sector.
He also held talks with representatives of 10 Minute School, one of Bangladesh’s leading online learning platforms and a British Council partner. Discussions focused on increasing access to English language education and internationally recognised assessment programmes.
Later in the day, McDonald met UK alumni and attended the event titled “Connecting People, Sharing Impact: British Council Grantee & UK Alumni Showcase.” The programme brought together alumni and grant recipients to share their experiences and discuss how their work has contributed to knowledge exchange and stronger connections between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
Speaking about the visit, McDonald highlighted the long-standing relationship between the British Council and Bangladesh.
“The British Council has been in Bangladesh since 1951 and we have built deep connections, over generations through education, culture and the relationships between the people of the UK and Bangladesh. I am delighted to be here to see those connections in action and to hear directly from the partners, teachers, students, young people and cultural leaders who are shaping them,” he said.
The visit reflects ongoing efforts to expand cooperation in education, cultural exchange, English language learning, and skills development while strengthening people-to-people links between the two countries.
