Katherine Ryan Speaks of “Grief and Relief” After Russell Brand Conviction

2 min read

Comedian and television personality Katherine Ryan has spoken publicly about experiencing a mixture of “grief and relief” following the conviction of Russell Brand on rape and sexual assault charges.

Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, Telling Everybody Everything, Ryan reflected on the emotional impact of the verdict and praised those who came forward with allegations despite the challenges they faced.

According to Ryan, many women have been privately discussing the outcome and are experiencing a complex range of emotions in response to the court’s decision.

“It really made me feel quite dysregulated again, caught off-guard, emotional, in awe of the survivors who also had nothing to gain,” Ryan said.

She noted that those who spoke out did so despite Brand’s public profile, influence, and large fan base.

“They came forward despite Russell Brand having fame, power, money, and a legion of fans ready to attack them.”

Ryan previously drew attention during a BBC documentary interview with Louis Theroux in 2022 when she spoke about what she described as a “predator” within the entertainment industry. At the time, she did not identify the individual, citing legal concerns, and has never publicly confirmed the person’s identity.

Discussing the recent verdict, Ryan stressed that her reaction was not about celebrating another person’s downfall but about acknowledging the significance of justice being served.

“I will never be someone who dances on graves. There has been some justice done today. There’s a level of relief, but there’s grief alongside relief.”

She also spoke about the lasting impact that abuse can have on victims, regardless of legal outcomes.

“Everything’s nuanced, and it was proved in court that a terrible thing happened, and that means that a terrible thing happened.”

“I just think again and again about people who have been hurt, and who have to carry that, who’ve carried that around long enough, and will continue to carry that in some way, regardless of what justice is done.”

The comments have drawn attention across the entertainment industry as discussions continue about accountability, survivor support, and the broader cultural impact of high-profile abuse cases.
