A female teacher has been praised for her extraordinary bravery after confronting a teenage gunman who stormed a school in Oregon, in an attack that left three children and a teacher dead before the suspect was stopped. According to police, the unnamed teacher sprang into action when a 16-year-old former student entered her classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday.
In a desperate attempt to protect her students, she threw her mobile phone and tackled the armed teenager, wrestling with him on the classroom floor as she tried to seize his weapon.
Authorities said the attacker opened fire inside the school, killing three children and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. The gunman’s rampage was ultimately brought to an end by a passing father who rushed into the school after hearing gunfire. Armed with a pistol, the man entered the building and confronted the suspect, fatally shooting him before more lives could be lost.
Police revealed that the teenager, who previously attended the school, still had approximately 44 rounds of shotgun ammunition when he was stopped. Investigators said he fired as many as 15 rounds inside the classroom during the attack. His motive remains under investigation.
“To the people who showed courage in the face of such violence and intervened to prevent this tragedy from being any worse, we owe you a debt of gratitude,” Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said while praising the actions of both the teacher and the armed parent.
Authorities identified two of the victims as five-year-old Rhoam Summer and teacher Meghan Lambert. In a statement shared through police, Lambert’s family described her as a compassionate educator whose lifelong dream was to teach in the same district where she grew up.
“She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs,” her family said, remembering her dedication to supporting vulnerable students and making a difference in her community.
The family of young Rhoam Summer has also spoken of their heartbreak following the tragedy. His grandfather, Bryan Jolly, said the family was devastated by the loss of the five-year-old child, whose death has left the community mourning alongside the families of the other victims.
The shooting has reignited national debate over school safety and gun violence in the United States, while the acts of courage displayed by school staff and members of the public have been credited with preventing an even greater loss of life.
