Rizvi Questions Remittance Shutdown Threat, Warns Against Disrupting Economy

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has criticised calls for a remittance shutdown, questioning the motives behind such a move and warning against actions that could harm the country’s economy.

He made the remarks on Friday while speaking at a prize-giving ceremony and discussion programme organised by Komol Kuri at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) auditorium of Dhaka University.

Rizvi expressed concern over proposals to halt remittance flows, arguing that such actions would undermine one of the country’s most important economic pillars.

“Those who want to bring the driving force of the country’s economy to a halt have never engaged in politics in the national interest,” he said.

He also questioned what opposition groups hoped to achieve through threats of a remittance shutdown, suggesting that the move may be politically motivated and asking whether there was any hidden agenda behind the proposal.

Addressing concerns about alleged irregularities and mismanagement at airports, Rizvi said citizens have the right to protest wrongdoing through lawful and democratic means, including press conferences and public advocacy.

However, he warned against taking the law into one’s own hands or resorting to violence.

“Any wrongdoing or mismanagement can be protested through a press conference,” he said, adding that action would be taken against anyone who physically assaults an airport official.

Rizvi emphasized the importance of maintaining order while addressing grievances and called for issues to be resolved through legal and institutional channels rather than disruptive actions.

His remarks come amid ongoing political debate over economic policy, governance, and public administration, with remittance flows continuing to play a vital role in supporting Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves and overall economy.
