Five men remain in custody in the United Kingdom following a counter-terrorism investigation involving an alleged plot targeting a site with longstanding links to the United States military, according to British authorities.
The location has historically played a significant role in US military operations and has recently been used by American aircraft as a staging point for defensive missions connected to tensions involving Iran.
US President Donald Trump said those arrested had been under surveillance and alleged they were planning to cause significant damage.
“We had them under view for a long time, and we got them,” Trump said.
The arrests prompted heightened security measures at military facilities associated with US operations in Britain. The US Department of Defense raised the threat level at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, home to the US Air Force’s 48th Fighter Wing, to its second-highest alert category.
A spokesperson for the United States Air Force (USAF) said personnel remain vigilant but declined to discuss specific security procedures or force protection measures.
Meanwhile, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed he had been in contact with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding the situation.
Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) and Gloucestershire Police said the investigation remains at an early stage. The five suspects were initially arrested by Gloucestershire Police on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act before being further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
Authorities have indicated that the operation was not intelligence-led, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
Police have not publicly released extensive details about the alleged plot, and no charges had been announced as of Sunday evening. Investigators are expected to continue questioning the suspects and reviewing evidence as the inquiry progresses.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of military-related facilities and the broader security environment surrounding US and UK defence installations.
