A former army officer has told Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal that four men, including Nazrul Islam, a witness in the BDR killings case, were abducted, killed, and their bodies disposed of in the Baleshwar River in 2010.
Testifying before Tribunal-1 on Thursday, Major Sabbir alleged that members of the intelligence wing of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-8 carried out the operation under the direction of former RAB intelligence chief Ziaul Ahsan.
According to the testimony, the four men were transported by fishing trawler to an area of the Baleshwar River near Char Duani in Patharghata. Major Sabbir stated that the victims’ faces and bodies were covered before they were killed. He further alleged that the bodies were tied to cement sacks and dumped into the river.
The witness also told the tribunal that another individual was allegedly killed in a similar manner during 2010 and disposed of in the same river.
In addition, Major Sabbir testified regarding the case of Alkas Majhi, a trawler operator who was allegedly involved in a RAB operation known as the “golf operation” in 2011. According to the testimony, Majhi was later abducted and killed.
The proceedings form part of an enforced disappearance case being heard by the tribunal. The court has already heard testimony from several witnesses, including former military and law enforcement officials.
Among those who have reportedly provided evidence in the case is former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, along with current and former military and RAB personnel.
The tribunal is expected to next hear evidence from the investigation officer before moving to the arguments stage, where both prosecution and defence lawyers will present their submissions.
The case remains before the court, and the allegations are being examined through the judicial process.
