Welsh actor Matthew Rhys has made Emmy Awards history by becoming the first performer to win two lead acting awards in a single year, capping off a remarkable night for the acclaimed star and delivering a proud moment for Wales.
Rhys earned the prestigious honors for his performances in the supernatural comedy Widow’s Bay and the psychological thriller The Beast In Me, making him the first actor to achieve a double victory in lead categories at the television industry’s most celebrated awards ceremony.
Accepting his second award of the evening, Rhys paid tribute to his Welsh roots, dedicating the achievement to the people of Wales and highlighting the role they played in shaping his career.

One of Rhys’s winning performances came in The Beast In Me, a psychological thriller starring Claire Danes. The series follows a grieving author who becomes increasingly fascinated by a mysterious neighbor suspected of murder. Rhys described his victory as a genuine surprise and thanked Danes for her support and collaboration throughout the production.
