Six Imams Kidnapped in Northern Nigeria as Authorities Launch Major Search Operation

Six Islamic clerics have been abducted in Nigeria’s northern Zamfara state after armed men ambushed their vehicle, highlighting the ongoing security challenges posed by kidnapping gangs operating across the region.

According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday along the Dakko-Damri feeder road, where a group of heavily armed assailants intercepted a vehicle carrying the victims. The six men, all identified as imams, were reportedly travelling to Talata Mafara when they were seized by the attackers.

Authorities said the kidnappers were believed to be members of criminal gangs commonly referred to locally as “bandits.” Such groups have become increasingly active in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have emerged as a major source of income for armed networks.

The abduction has drawn significant attention due to the status of the victims and the circumstances of their journey. Local media reports indicated that the imams were expected to attend a religious gathering in Talata Mafara.

In response, security agencies have launched an extensive search operation across the area. Police said security teams are combing surrounding forests and remote locations in an effort to locate the victims and bring those responsible to justice

Zamfara has been one of the regions hardest hit by violence linked to armed gangs, with residents frequently facing threats including kidnappings, robberies, and attacks on rural communities. Authorities continue to face challenges in tackling criminal networks that operate across vast and often difficult-to-police areas.

The latest abduction underscores the persistent security concerns in northern Nigeria, where officials are under pressure to strengthen protection for travelers and communities vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
