A massive traffic tailback stretching at least 40 kilometres has paralysed movement on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, leaving thousands of passengers stranded for hours as vehicles crawled and often remained completely stationary from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.
Traffic moved intermittently earlier on Friday, but conditions deteriorated sharply by late afternoon. By midnight, long‑distance travellers were still stuck in gridlock. “I left Cumilla for Dhaka in the evening, but I had not even reached Daudkandi by 11:30pm,” said bus passenger Saiful Alam, who remained trapped in the jam for hours.
Drivers reported overwhelming congestion made worse by lane closures. Ahmed Karim, a driver for Star Line, said one lane had been shut due to road damage, compounding the already heavy volume of vehicles. As the night progressed, the tailback stretched from Ashariar Char in Narayanganj through Daudkandi to Elliotganj in Cumilla, forming one of the longest traffic snarls in recent months.
By Saturday morning, traffic on the affected section was almost at a standstill. Passengers on long‑distance buses, along with drivers and workers of goods‑laden vehicles, endured severe hardship as they remained stuck for hours with little movement.
Officials from the Roads and Highways Department said recent heavy rainfall had created potholes of varying sizes along several points of the highway, making travel risky. A particularly large pothole on the Dhaka‑bound lane at Ashariar Char forced authorities to begin emergency repair work, further slowing traffic.
Kanchpur Highway Police Station Officer‑in‑Charge Shafiul Islam confirmed that emergency repairs were underway on one of the two lanes, contributing to the prolonged congestion.
With repairs ongoing and vehicle pressure showing no signs of easing, commuters are bracing for continued delays on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
