EU Preparing Its Most Extensive Russia Sanctions Yet, Says Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas

1 min read

The European Union is preparing to significantly expand sanctions against Russia in the coming months, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told German newspaper Die Welt. Please confirm all political information with a trusted source.

Kallas said existing EU sanctions have already inflicted major economic damage on Moscow, claiming they have deprived Russia’s war machine of over €1 trillion ($1.16 trillion). She added that a new package expected in autumn would be the “most far‑reaching sanctions listings since the start of the war.”

Once adopted, she said, the measures would increase the number of sanctioned Russian entities by one‑third, intensifying pressure on the Kremlin until it ends its invasion of Ukraine. Kallas did not provide further details on the timing or scope of the upcoming package.

The EU last updated its sanctions regime in July, targeting Russia’s banking sector and cryptocurrency networks as part of its ongoing response to the war.
