The shallow quake occurring just 15km below the surface hit shortly before 05:00 local time, followed by an extraordinary 341 aftershocks. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said preliminary assessments show more than 900 homes and hundreds of other buildings have been severely damaged.
The full scale of the disaster is still emerging, especially after news broke of a second magnitude‑6.9 earthquake elsewhere in Indonesia a stark reminder of the region’s volatility along the Ring of Fire.
BNPB officials said tremors were felt as far west as Bima, but Manggarai province suffered some of the worst impacts. Deputy BNPB chief Abdul Muhari confirmed 25 deaths in Manggarai, 20 in East Manggarai, four in Sikka, two in Ende, and one each in Nagekeo and West Manggarai.
