Canberra Institute of Technology chief executive Margot McNeill has resigned after months of scrutiny over her appointment and her handling of a misconduct investigation linked to her previous role at TAFE NSW. Her departure ends a turbulent chapter for CIT, where questions over transparency and governance have dominated headlines since early this year.
Dr McNeill, who took on the CEO role in June 2025, described her decision as “tremendously difficult” in a statement announcing her resignation. But pressure had been intensifying since revelations emerged that she failed to disclose an investigation into misconduct during her time at TAFE NSW a matter that later became the focus of multiple ACT Legislative Assembly inquiries.
In May, an Assembly inquiry found Dr McNeill “should have disclosed the information about the misconduct investigation or findings to the CIT board in a timely manner and that she did not.” She maintained she was under a strict obligation not to reveal the investigation’s existence, but TAFE NSW publicly contradicted that claim, deepening the controversy.
Her testimony before the initial committee triggered a second probe, which last week delivered a scathing assessment, accusing her of being “deliberately obstructive” and “combative” during the process. The findings renewed calls for her resignation and raised concerns about whether she had misled the Assembly.
Dr McNeill’s legal case against TAFE NSW remains ongoing in the NSW Supreme Court, adding another layer of complexity to her departure. CIT has not yet announced who will step into the leadership role as the institution works to restore confidence and stability.
