A 16‑year‑old boy has been charged over a deadly crash near Katherine that claimed the life of another teenager and left five others injured, following what police allege was the use of a stolen vehicle.
The rollover occurred just before 6am on June 2 along the Stuart Highway, about three kilometres north of Katherine. A 16‑year‑old boy was killed when the vehicle lost control and rolled, scattering a group of teenagers who were travelling inside.
Five others two girls aged 16 and 17, two 15‑year‑old boys, and a 13‑year‑old boy were found at the crash site and taken to hospital with minor injuries. Another 16‑year‑old boy, also believed to have been in the vehicle, later presented at a local clinic with minor injuries.
Northern Territory Police confirmed they arrested a 16‑year‑old boy on Friday, alleging he was the driver at the time of the crash. He now faces a suite of serious charges, including driving a motor vehicle causing death, careless driving causing death, and five counts of recklessly endangering life.
He has also been charged with two counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent, along with dangerous driving, aggravated burglary, and driving never licensed. Police say he has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in court on Monday.
