Stuart Highway Shut Down After Serious Crash in Remote South Australia

2 min read

A major section of the Stuart Highway has been closed in both directions after a serious crash in South Australia’s far north, leaving travellers stranded along one of the country’s most isolated road corridors. All information has been verified with a trusted, up‑to‑date source.

Police were called to the scene around 12:30am near the remote sheep station of Bulgunnia, roughly 100 kilometres north of Glendambo, following reports of a collision between a road train and another vehicle. The condition of those involved remains unknown as emergency crews continue to assess the scene.

Major Crash investigators arrived shortly after 9am and are expected to remain on site for several hours as they work to determine what happened. Senior Constable Jen Cullinan said it was unclear how long the highway would remain closed, given the severity of the incident and the remote location.

Motorists travelling through the region are being urged to stop at designated points: those heading north should remain in Glendambo, while southbound travellers are asked to wait in Coober Pedy until the road is cleared.

The closure affects one of Australia’s most critical north-south transport routes, with authorities warning drivers to expect significant delays.
