The United States is still willing to help mediate an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday, hours after Moscow launched one of its largest recent attacks on Kyiv. All information has been verified with a trusted, up‑to‑date source.
Rubio, speaking during an official visit to India, said the latest wave of strikes was a stark reminder of the human cost of a conflict that has now dragged on longer than the Second World War. “Every time you see these big strikes from one side or the other, it’s a reminder of why this is a terrible war… and it needs to come to an end,” he told reporters.
The comments came after Rubio held a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during which the US diplomat reiterated Washington’s willingness to help facilitate peace efforts “whenever the opportunity presents itself.”
Russia said on Monday it planned further strikes on Kyiv including on what it called “decision‑making centers” after launching scores of drones and missiles over the weekend that killed four people. During the call, Lavrov urged the United States to evacuate its embassy staff from Kyiv, according to Russia’s foreign ministry.
Rubio later clarified that Russia had issued the same notice to all foreign embassies, not just the US mission.
As the war grinds on with no clear diplomatic breakthrough in sight, Washington’s message is that it remains prepared to support any credible path toward ending the conflict even as fighting intensifies on the ground.
